Ian Nathan was born in 1954 and spent his formative years in the beautiful Devon town of Teignmouth where his ancestors had lived and worked as fisherman and lifeboatmen. He showed an ability to paint and draw from an early age, but other pastimes such as boxing and dancing took over for several years. In 1969 he joined the Royal Ballet in London where he trained for four years. He had the experience of dancing at Covent Garden and watching at close quarters one of the most famous dance partnerships of all time, Fonteyn and Nureyev.
Realising that the ballet wasn't for him, he returned to Teignmouth and began working as a labourer on the local docks. Several more jobs followed, including boat building and work on the roads. Later he began a Graphic Design course, but left after two years to pursue a full-time painting career. Local exhibitions at Torquay's Triton gallery were a sell-out and soon he was showing his work in London's best galleries. He eventually joined the Halcyon Gallery.
The 11 very successful years spent with them established him as one of the country's finest artists, and it was also during this period that he had the great pleaseure of meeting Princess Ann on several occasions presenting her with 3 of his paintings for her various charitites.
Ian then had a very successful 5 year period opening up his own gallery in Teignmouth before moving a mile to Shaldon, where he now lives and paints. He wasvery pleased to be invited to join the internationally renowned Claverdon group of galleries but by now although Ian had made his name nationally as a wildlife artisit it became clear that this era was drawing to a close.
These days he is on a new exciting pathway and drawing on nearly 50 years of experience he is producing some of the most important paintings of hi career so far, sometimes leaving behind the constraints of detail in pursuit of the unobtainable, it could be a local scene or a nude or more than likely an impressionist or semi abstract landscape or seascape which appears to be his new passion and direction of travel.
